Cheap Wine And A Three Day Growth

Written by Ian Robertson on 6th July 2009

Due to circumstances beyond my immediate control (ie a lack of money due to the GFC…darn, I really hate that acronym!) you will see some more ‘keenly’ priced wines reviewed on the site in the coming weeks. There will still be more premium wines from producers who submit, but wine I purchase for review will be on the cheaper end of the spectrum. Yes, even casks…

Yes, this prospect fills me with dread.

There is no doubt in my mind that wine in the cheaper end of the market has improved out of sight in the last ten years. We tend a better vineyard, we make better decisions when we pick, and good choices making adjustments in the cellar. The industry of bulk wine is approached with a far more consistent product in mind.

So, I really should not be filled with so much fear. The artisan winemakers certainly make a product that is all round more interesting, and especially in my mind single vineyard wines that speak of a place. (yes, the romantic in me still likes to taste a single vineyard wine.) And, I will still have these wines submitted to me.

Just perhaps – I don’t normally choose the wines I am about to frequent in the coming months.
