Meerea Park - You just gotta be impressed
Written by Ian Robertson on 24th August 2009
Ordinarily, this is not the place where I write about producers. I have a little section specially for them. But, recently, I was bowled over by the quality of a range of wines from a producer and I just have to include a 'Ranting' article about the experience! Meerea Park have always impressed me. I have tasted a range of wines from them over the years, and their Semillon in particular was of an otherworldly standard at times. To my taste (however many other wine writers disagreed with me) their Shiraz had the potential to be world beating Hunter styles, but the oak was slightly too 'modern' and the wines seemed a bit glossy to me. Still very good. If you head to latest reviews, you will spot a clump of Meerea Park wines reviewed. And you will see something that I don't think has ever happened to me. Out of the six different wines I tasted, I rated four of them Outstanding quality. (and in truth, was very close to giving the Hell Hole Shiraz an Outstanding rating as well.) These wines are classy yet rustic, intense yet subtle, and brilliantly conceived and put together. They represent everything that the Hunter Valley should be in the wine world. When you experience something like this, you just have to sit back and raise a glass in celebration. Get out there and try these wines. They deserve it.
