Bass Phillip Premium 2005
Made by Bass Phillip Wines in Australia (region: Gippsland)
.
A dry, still, red wine with 12.9% alcohol tasted on 13th Jul 2009.
Grape: Pinot Noir
Quality: Okay
Value: Ouch!
Cost: Usually between $129.99 - $150.00.
Looks: Darker colour than many Pinot's yet still light looking in body
Smells: Yeasty, dark cherry
Feels: Light
Tastes: Reputation is a funny thing. Phillip Jones has built an enviable reputation on the back of some stunning Burgundian style Pinot Noirs. He has also built a reputation as a maverick - someone not afriad to be bold and try things. The resulting wines tend to show this attitude - sheer brilliance to not particularly good. Unfortunately, this wine falls into the latter category. Soupy and sour in flavour with no distinct characteristics, there is some dark cherry and undergrowth with tomoato skins perhaps, and maybe some spice, but it is all caught up in a yeasty flat tasting wine. Shame - the spice notes especailly are tasty and you get the feeling had fate gone the right way, this wine could have been brilliant.
Possible retailers: Cellar Door / Web Site, 1st Choice.
